Self-Love Sunday: The Self-Love Tag

The selflovetag
Hey Pretty Lovelies!

I noticed a few posts back when I did The Life in Letters Tag people responded pretty well. So I figured if people like tags, and I like self-love, why not create a self-love tag!

Here are the rules:
Answer all of the below questions in a blog post.
Then nominate at least 5 other bloggers. (Feel free to do more, promoting self-love is awesome, I just didn’t want to create a huge daunting number)
Contact those bloggers and you are good to go!

1. What does Self-love mean to you?
For me it means investing in a relationship with yourself. Treating yourself like you would treat the love of your life, because in my opinion, YOU should be the love of your life.

2. What is your favourite way to pamper yourself?
I like lighting yummy smelling candles and soaking in the bath! That or getting my nails done ALWAYS feels great… there is just something about that classic cliche.
PicMonkey Collagenails

3. What are your three favourite hobbies/ pass times that make your soul feel on fire?
Having something I call  Deep and Meaningful conversations. I LOVE having those talks that just make me feel like my soul is swelling up! Acting, I’ve always loved it and always will… must have come from my massive imaginations as a child and always wanting to play pretend. Writing totally feeds me soul, whether I’m writing here on Pretty Lovely Girls or writing a fictional story, I love it.

4. What movie always puts you in a good mood when you’re not in the greatest mood?
Probably The Wedding Date, I’m a sucker for Romantic Comedies.
PicMonkey Collagewd

5. Who do you trust SO MUCH that you would easily believe in anything and everything they said?
Hands down my brother Dax. He is seriously a huge part of who I am today because he taught me to be open minded and kind and to explore my inner workings.

6. What quote totally motivates you?
This John Lennon quote, for sure! It made me realize that sometimes other people wont understand your desire to just be happy and kind. And that is ok, it doesn’t mean you have to stop wanting to be happy and kind — especially to yourself.

7. When was the last time you took yourself on a date? What did you do?
I’ll say shopping… just me, the mall and my Starbucks Vanilla Chai Latte. Yes please! That was maybe two weeks ago.

8. What make-up or beauty product makes you feel like a million bucks?
My nighttime skincare routine ALWAYS makes me feel so lovely in the evening. I actually look forward to it all day. I am SUPER excited to do a post on it.
night routine

9. What is the last thing you did for someone else that made you feel amazing?
Probably getting all of Josh’s (my boyfriend) birthday gifts and showering him with multiple presents haha. But the best one was getting one of the only photos he has of him, his mom and his dad enlarged and framed.

10. Do you feel comfortable with and without make-up on? Why?
Honestly, it depends on the day. Sometimes I feel so flawless without make-up and other days I’m like… yikes, cover THAT up. I’d say I mostly wear make-up because its fun but there are totally days when I’m worried about what other think of how I look, which is definitely something I’m working on. I think I actually feel like I look the best at the end of the day after my night time skincare routine!

11. What piece of advice would you give a child about to grow up with the pressures of today’s media and its crushing expectations?
Its so hard to pick one thing. I think teaching kids to be confident in who they are no matter how they look, etc is so important. And I think it starts with US feeling confident and showing them that.

12. What song puts you in a good mood every time?
Love is On The Radio by McFly FOR SURE. It’s just so feel good.
PicMonkey Collagemcfly

13. What is the best advice someone gave you or you realized about life?
At the end of the day, no matter what happens, you are NEVER alone. You ALWAYS have yourself. Seriously the one person you will always have is you, so why not invest in yourself so your life partner (again YOU) feels happy and fulfilled?

14. Who makes you giggle like a giggle monster?
Without a doubt one of my best friends Ally. She can literally say ONE WORD and I’m on the ground laughing my butt off. We have this weird affect on each other. Sometimes we don’t even say a word and suddenly we are both stuck in a fit of giggles. Man, its the best feeling in the world.
PicMonkey Collageat

15. What is something about society that bugs you that you wish didn’t?
For me, I think gender roles and stereotypes. Miss Representation, the documentary really gets my blood boiling because it hurts me to see how much woman suffer in todays society. But also how boys and men suffer. I can’t wait to see The Mask You Live In. Gender roles and stereotypes seriously have to be changed, it has to be opened up and expanded and redefined for sure. So that girls can feel comfortable being leaders and dressing how they like and so boys can feel comfortable being emotional the expressive.

PicMonkey Collagegender

16. What is one of your favourite things to do on the weekends?
Definitely waking up to a fresh cup of tea and sitting at my lap top catching up on Beauty Blogger stuff and relaxing.

PicMonkey Collagetea

17. What is something you’re really proud of that you’ve done?
Probably putting my foot down and saying, its my life, I’ll do what I want, even if that means people will grill me for leaving school without graduating. If I know it wont fulfill me, I’ll change it. I’m proud of the courage I have to change things.

18. What is one of your favourite memories with one of your friends?
With Ally, dancing like an idiot around my room around this time last year with a feather boa to Carly Rae Jepsen, up that happened.

19. What advice would you give someone who needs a boost in confidence?
Don’t try to gain confidence for others, gain it for yourself. Basically work on you, what makes you happy? What makes you feel alive and proud? The more you invest in that, the more happy you feel, the more that will shine out and to me thats confidence.

20. Lastly, how do you plan on investing in self-love?
I want to really listen to myself and be aware of my needs and spend my time doing things that make me genuinely happy and surround myself with people who are happy and supportive.

And there it is — The Self-Love Tag! I hope you enjoyed it!

Quick n’ Lovely Review: The Body Shop’s Shimmer Cubes Palette 22

Hey Pretty Lovelies!

Today was soooo, so beautiful up here just north of the GTA. We have been battling some crazy weather this year, so it was nice for some sunshine and above zero weather! This made me want to start reviewing some of my more bright and spring/summer colours. A couple of weeks ago, I was in the Body Shop restocking my usual purchases (*Look out for a review on my favourite Body Shop products coming next week!) and saw this gorgeous set of Shimmer Cubes – Palette 22. A few years back, I had bought a few products of the Body Shop’s makeup line, and wasn’t too crazy about them. Recently though, I have heard a lot of decent reviews of their makeup lately as some of the products have been reformatted…so I figured why not!

– The Look –

Packing of these shimmer cubes is…basic. I appreciate that within the cube, each eyeshadow colour has its own lid. This type of plastic packaging though, I’m overall not a fan of. It is so easy for the top lid to fall off, or loosen and break. Come on Body Shop, update this! Within the packaging, these eyeshadows look so beautiful and shimmery and totally make me think of sun, alcoholic beverages and the beach. *sigh…..*

– Smell and Feel –

The cubes don’t have any smell. They’re so densly packed with eyeshadow that to the touch they’re very hard – feels like no product will come off, but it quite easily transfers.

PicMonkey Collage.jpg

– Functionality –

The cubes transfer well onto the skin, but I’m not a fan of using any brushes to apply these. I stick to my ring finger. The colours are so beautiful on the skin, but as you can see from the photo below, they come off VERY easily with one simple rinse of water and a light rub. The shadows look great and last a decent amount of time, but only when I wear an eye primer (Currently: Guerlain Ombre Eclat Base – Smoothing and Priming Base) under. This also helps to get the best possible colour payoff!

– Downsides –

Packaging, and the lasting power…but the packaging is something I can look over because of the beautiful colours, and the lasting power – well, thank goodness of priming products!

Would I recommend?
If you can get these or any of the other shimmer cube sets during one of their awesome sales, then I would say go for it. But to run to your local Body Shop tomorrow and knock down the doors before they open? Nah. I think the colour range, pigmentation and lasting power is easily found in many other lines (and you’ll probably get a better, more travel friendly package too…).

The above being said, I can’t wait to try and get some more wear of these eyeshadow cubes this Summer and my other bright and fun colours! It just makes me so excited for Spring and Summer to finally arrive.

Have you had any luck with The Body Shop’s makeup line? What are your favourites or biggest disappointments?

Quick n’ Lovely Review: Tarte LipSurgence

Hey Pretty Lovelies!

Before we get started. I think I’m going to do a self-love tag of some sort so keep your eyes open for that!

Now, I love lip products. In fact, my drug of choice is lip products, with blush swiftly in second. I got my first Tarte LipSurgence in Exposed a few years back for my Formal look and I was a big fan. So over the holidays when I saw the set of eight mini Lip Tints by Tarte I HAD to get my hands on them. As you can see, I got them.

And boy was I disappointed. Let me go into detail.

Right to left. generous, cheerful, glee, destined

Right to left. Generous, Cheerful, Glee, Destined

Right to left. Enamored, Believe, Lovely, Grateful.

– The Look –
I love the packaging, its cute, it screams Tarte — it looks fantastic. BUT some of the packaging also throws you off the scent of the real colours going on under those lids. ESPECIALLY the light pink pencil Glee, I was SO excited for that colour and it turns out, its a dark pink, so disappointed. Now I do love a lot of these colours, Cheerful and Lovely have got to be my favourites. So if I like the colours, why am I disappointed? Keep reading.

Meet the Matte’s — they give off, obviously, a matte finish.

Right to left. Exposed, Generous, Cheerful, Glee, Destined.

Meet the shiny — they give off a more glossy buttery look.

Right to left. Enamored, Believe, Lovely, Grateful.

– Smell and Feel –
They smell of mint, yummy! The mattes feel nice and don’t dry me out too much. The glossy’s feel like a delicious butter spreading across your lips.

Right to left. Exposed, Generous, Cheerful, Glee, Destined

Right to left. Enamored, Believe, Lovely, Grateful.

– Functionality –
The pigment of the matte pencils is great, for the shiny ones, it takes a few extra swipes. Here comes the big let down… the staying power is ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. Especially the ones that aren’t matte. The glossy ones come off so quickly its disgusting, its like wiping butter off. They go on very nice and the crayon tip is the perfect size, but if you are looking for your favourite colour to stay put, you will be heartbroken. What is the friggin’ point on a lip colour IF YOU HAVE TO REAPPLY EVERY MINUTE?
HOWEVER Exposed worked fine for me and still does, which is the weirdest part! I never had any reason to suspect while using this one that future purchases of the same would leave me heartbroken. It was probably that I usually used it as a base and would put a gloss over top of it.

– Downsides –
I’ll give you ONE BLOODY GUESS… Yup, the staying power is a piece of crap. Which sadly trumps the lovely packaging, smell, feeling and colours.

Would I recommend?
Absolutely not. Unless you are SERIOUSLY in love with a colour that you can’t find anywhere else and don’t mind CONSTANTLY reapplying.

So if you are looking for something similar but are now put off, I’d go with Revlon COLORBURST. Much better staying power and the packaging on the outside reflects whats on the inside.

Have you tried any of these? Did you experience the same heartbreak as me or did it stay put for you? Let me know!

Stay lovely,

V’s ASSEMBLAGE: Winterlicious Lippies

Today I was walking home from work, in the sunshine and getting a bit steamed up in my thick knit scarf and winter coat – and I thought to myself that winter is almost gone (yay!), so I better hurry up and post about my favourite dark lippies!

There’s something about a sultry, deep plum/berry lipstick. I find that these shades compliment my dark hair/eyes. (Whereas I look quite silly in more pink tones!)

So let’s get to it! I’ve picked four to compare and fill you in on why I reach for them from my collection.

PicMonkey Collage.jpg

Giorgio Armani – Rouge Ecstasy 510 Dolci
DIOR Diorific Collection (Golden Winter) – 042 Winter
RIMMEL – Long Lasting Finish Lipstick by Kate Moss 107
MAC – Diva

– The Look –

This lipstick is the lightest of my berry collection, with a slight pink tint versus a more purple undertone. It has a sheer finish that required some building to get a strong colour.

At first this lippy looks matte, but has a sheen to it in direct light. The finish has a more metallic look, which makes the colour so unique. Brass-y Berry is how I like to describe it!

Straight up red wine berry. Wonder matte finish that has great pigmentation.

The deepest of my collection, this lipstick makes me feel like I’m back in the 90s and should be in a teenage angst movie – and I love it. Though it has a matte finish, it still looks creamy without any drying.

– The Feel –

The sheerness of this lipstick makes it glide on easily (though needs to be built up for a stronger colour payoff) and very comfortable to wear. You get the lusious look of a lip gloss without the sticky feeling.

Comfortable, applies easily with good colour payoff.

Glides on well, but does start to feel dried out after an hour or so for me, personally…but the colour is worth it! (and the price!)

Best feeling of the four – and who would think with a matte finish! Best pigmentation/lasting power/colour/everything.

– The Functionality –

The only one of the four that I would be willing to wear to work/in a more professional setting. The sheerness is beautiful and comfortable to wear all day (but absolutely would require some reapplying).

Such a different colour – I’ve never seen one the same. Good lipstick, but I don’t grab it as often as I wish I did (because of the price)

I love this lipstick, the colour is so sexy…but because of the drying factor I have to be more careful about when i decide to wear it.

Best option for me (other than 9-5). Lasts all day with no need for reapplication (especially when paired with a liner) and I find to be the most flattering colour for my skin and makes my teeth look the so white! Can’t get better than that.

– The Downsides –

Only downsides would be the drying of the RIMMEL 107, and the requirement of often reapplication of Armani, though both of these issues are some that I can still overlook easily for their benefits (since I still reach for them often enough to not regret my purchases).

end pic

– Final Recommendation –

The winner for me is MAC DIVA. I think this will always be my go to dark berry lipstick. I would still recommend trying any if you get the chance to – as they could work for you for many other reasons than me!

What’s your favourite Winterlicious Lipstick?

Quick n’ Lovely Review: My FAVOURITE Mascara Duo

favourite mascara duo
Hey Pretty Lovelies!

Today I thought I’d share with you a major staple in my beauty routine. YES I use two mascaras every day, but if I use just one its either one of these depending on the look I’m going for.

Laura Mercier Long Lash Mascara
This baby is great at filling out and defining my lashes. It’s wonderful if I just want a subtle pop. It looks natural and doesn’t clump or stick my lashes together. It makes an AMAZING base for Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara.

– The Look –
I LOVE the look of this product. I love the of off purple colour, the silver lettering, the shape — all of it I adore. Its fresh. I LOVE that the wand is thin, less hassle of mess ups and its PERFECT for getting my bottom lashes.

– Functionality –
Amazing, outstanding, just right. Seriously if Goldy Locks got her hands on this mascara she’d be coming back for seconds and a long comfy nap. But seriously, its smooth, easy to handle and works really well.

– Downsides –
None that I can see, really. Unless you want SUPER WOW lashes, then this mascara is great. Especially for natural looks.

Benefit They’re Real Mascara
Say hello to my HOLY FREAKING GRAIL mascara. I first grabbed the sample from Sephora a couple of years ago and never looked back. It completely changed my eyelash game. In fact I’d even say it made them healthier, longer and more accepting of mascaras.

– The Look –
One of the reasons I love Benefit is for their amazing packaging and style. They’re Real is no exception. Its sleek, its different, it pops out at you without having to be a crazy colour. The brush, is incredible. Let me tell you, I just thought the tip was cool and funky but I JUST found out that it actually has an amazing purpose. See functionality.

– Functionality –
The brush separates and lengthens my lashes and the black formula makes my eyes pop! You use it like any regular mascara, horizontally. BUT THEN — you use it vertically and use the funky tip to fan out your lashes even more. It’s incredible, you’re lashes look so much fuller and thicker.

IMG_9583– Downsides –
ABSOLUTELY FREAKING NON! YUP. Okay well maybe because the brush is thick you have to watch you don’t get any on your lids, etc. But if you’re careful, no worries. And if you aren’t careful. e.l.f has an amazing Studio Mascara and Eyeshadow Shield to help you out.

So as you’ve probably figured out, I put a few coats of Laura Mercier Long Lash Mascara on to define the lashes and set up a good base for Benefit They’re Real Mascara to come in and add that WOW factor.

If you’re looking for a new mascara I would HIGHLY recommend either of these beauties. Laura Mercier for a more natural defined coverage and Benefit for a more full defined coverage.

What mascaras do you use? Do you put two together or do you have one that does all the work for you?

Stay lovely,
