Spread The Laughter

Hey Pretty Lovelies!

First off I am sincerely sorry for being MIA. Unfortunately I have some sad news to share. My mom has passed away. She was the most special person in the world to me, my best friend.

10639602_10202802426255594_2705222384825039966_n
She taught me so much about what it meant to be a strong woman and a strong person and how sharing love can be the best feeling in the world. I don’t feel prepared to write a whole post about this part of my life just yet, though I will in the future – to help others who are also going through loss and to educate people on why you shouldn’t be scared of grieving or having a grieving person in your life.

But before that post happens, I wanted to spread some LOVE AND LAUGHTER!

While I was home my best friend Ally came to be with me, she is my sister and my mom was like her second mom. A couple years ago Ally and I started a YouTube Channel called The Bright n Shiny Show. Its main purpose is to make people smile and laugh, with a few life lessons and other random stuff we want to document and share. We currently live across the country from one another but while she was home we did THE WHISPER CHALLENGE!

So here it is, ready for your viewing pleasure! It was just the pick me up I needed. SPREAD THE LAUGHTER!

Seven Facts About Me:
1. I have two cats – George and Pipe – both rescues who are my children. I really don’t even think there would be any room for some real babies up in here. They’re my little monkeys.
3

Pipe – 2 year old female

2. I spent my 2012 Christmas Day on an Elephant Conservation reserve in Thailand. Needless to say, it was one of the most awesome and magical moments in my recent years.
Untitled
3. I have a pretty big obsession with the Boston Bruins (NHL team) – I even caved and put one of those silly stickers on my car during playoffs last year…something I told myself I’d never do!
2
4. Following the whole obsessions theme…I recently got insanely into the show ‘Scandal’ starring Kerry Washington. If you haven’t yet checked it out and are looking for one of the best shows I’ve ever watched, then I would strongly suggest it. She is the most badass lead female that I’ve seen in a show probably ever. 4699bfee3c6a8b7ddb8026e41a113aec
5. I have two tattoos – but I don’t want to tell you what they are because it’s embarassing ;). Maybe once we get to know eachother a little better, eh? (for you non Canadians…just ignore the ‘eh’)
6. If I didn’t have five+ alarm clocks screaming at me every morning I would never wake up. Days that I don’t have any set I can easily stay in bed til 3-4pm. I think I was a zombie in another life.
7. I confess that I recently got rid of my iPhone 5 and jumped ship to an Android phone (the Nexus) and I must say…I am so happy I did. I know it’s taboo to ever admit that you don’t miss an Apple product – but alas! I don’t! At all!
Thanks again to Jackie Nicole for the recognition, and below are our picks for the Very Inspiring Award! Can’t wait to read all of your responses to the questions :).

The Life in Letters Tag

life in letters tag

Hey Pretty Lovelies!

It is time for the usual Monday post, however the lovely Kayla (she is absolutely one of my favourite beauty bloggers out there) from Microscope Beauty has tagged me in her The Life in Letters Tag Post. So hopefully on this wonderful Monday you don’t mind learning about me!

A is for Australia: I traveled to Australia for five months with one of my best friends between High School and University. It was an unreal trip, I really came out of my shell, I have SO many amazing memories. I wish I could go back all the time and see all the wonderful friends I made but it’s seriously expensive and when you go, you better go for a while to make the 24 hour trip worth it!

PicMonkey Collage
B is for Bear: Bear is my cat. He is the most loving, cuddly sucker in the world. I got him from Urban Cat Relief. I had been looking for a cat for a while and stumbled onto his profile. He looked SO cute and so much like my old cat Eeyor that I have to inquire. Turns out he has FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) so a lot of people backed out of taking him for fear of his sickness. But his foster mom made him sound SO lovely that I had to give this big guy a home. And boy am I glad I did!
PicMonkey Collagebear
C is for Canada: I live in Canada and while it is a mighty fine country, this winter has been hell. The worst one I have ever witnessed. Hi Summer, I’m inviting you to visit FOREVER.

D is for Doritos: This one time I made nachos using Doritos. I recommend it if you are having a cheat day or if you want something seriously unhealthy but SO DELICIOUSLY SINFUL.

E is for Ellen Page: Have you seen her coming out speech. My god. She is an absolute inspiration and I’ve always really loved her acting, shes funny, shes charming, she is SO talented. I love her and am so very proud of her as her fan and as a fellow human being.

PicMonkey Collageellen
F is for Fear: I was re-watching The Princess Diaries the other week (yeah, so what) and there was a wonderful quote that was about fear that I liked a lot. “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something is more important than fear. The brave may not live forever, but the cautious do not live at all.” Fear can be pretty crippling and as someone who has has experience in the anxiety department, this quote is a nice motivation for those of us struggling to embrace courage.

G is for Garden: I so desperately want to have a garden when I have my own place (I mean without a house full of roommates). Even if I am in an apartment next year I at least want to grow my own herbs in the window. My dad got really into gardening about 15 years ago and I LOVE how peaceful his backyard is. You can do so much with your outdoor space.

H is for Harry Potter: I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan. I even have the light charm Lumos tattooed on the inside of my wrist. It is there to remind me to create my own light and to always encourage imagination and my inner child.

PicMonkey Collagehp

I is for Inspiration: I find I am constantly being inspired my movies, tv shows, human beings, stories, blogs, quotes, photos. If you ask the universe to be inspired whether it is to be inspired to believe in the human race, or love, or kindess or creativity. If you really ask, you’ll be inspired.

J is for Just Keep Swimming: I think we’ve all had those days where we really don’t want to deal, or we want to stay in bed and not face the day. But sometimes all you have to do it just keep stepping forward, just keep swimming forward and it WILL get better. It always does. One thing I’ve always noticed about life is that is will always work out, no matter what has happened in my life — it has always worked out. And I think it does that because I believe in it so much. I’m still here, I’m still alive and I am so very grateful for that.

PicMonkey Collagekeepswimming

K is for Kindness: Just a reminder to be kind. We all have our stuff. And if someone is mean to you, it has nothing to do with you (unless you were a prick) but it has everything to do with them and how they decide to react and treat you. So be mindful of every situation you are in and understand that you influence people and more importantly you influence your future self.

L is for Love: How unoriginal right? Well not if I’m talking about self-love. We have a serious lack of self-love in todays society. Whether it be because of crushing standards within beauty and body image or because we are encouraged to find and love someone else with our whole selves. Well let me tell you, as someone who is completely in love and fully committed to someone else, there is absolutely room for self-love. In fact I don’t think I would love Josh as much as I do if I didn’t love and invest in my relationship with myself first. We should be taught to encourage self-love, to encourage growing up treating and investing in ourselves and THEN finding someone else to love and cherish if we’d like.

SELFLOVE

M is for My Mad Fat Diary: My absolute FAVOURITE show right now. It is a UK based show and if you haven’t seen it, GET ON IT! It is SO real, it deals with issues most if not all of us have been through and it is funny as hell. Such a charming and hard hitting show. I seriously recommend for your next watching binge.
mymadfat

N is for Nico Mirallegro: Nico is currently one of my absolute favourite actors, he is incredibly talented and very versatile. He also just happens to be my biggest ‘celebrity’ crush right now. You can watch him in the UK shows My Mad Fat Dairy, The Village or Upstairs Downstairs. Swoon.

PicMonkey Collagenico

O is for Orgasmic: Have you ever had a food orgasm? One where you close your eyes and literally moan because that delicious edible thing you just put in your mouth is an explosion of pure flavor and joy? My favourite restaurant is Terroni (so much so that I went to the LA location when I was in California) because they have the best dish I’ve ever tasted. Spaghetti al Limone. OH MAN. This would ABSOLUTELY be my last meal if I had any say about it.

PicMonkey Collageterroni

P is for Pools: I seriously miss swimming in friends pools growing up. It is SO fun and seriously great for your health… but going to the pool at the gym weirds me out because I always been like I’m in the way. So I don’t swim anymore, which is sad. Unless I’m at the lake or on vacation by the ocean, which is always a treat!

Q is for Quality: As a recent Beauty blogger I find myself really trying to make sure the quality of our blog is great. You know what they always say quality over quantity! Which is why I generally like to or want to support local stores, businesses and farms over chains and corporations. Things aren’t built to last anymore and its sad.

R is for Relaxation: Hi there, I’m an introvert. Which generally means I get pretty damn tired and stressed when I haven’t had enough downtime or me time. It took me many years to realize that this isn’t a bad thing. I am who I am and if I need and want to relax, dammit I will!

Nature_Beach_Relax_034690_

S is for Seizures Palace: Seizures Palace is my boyfriend Josh’s electronic music project. I always love hearing his new tracks… it helps that they are absolutely badass. I’ve watched (or listened) him grow so much even just in the year that we’ve been together. Feel free to check out his Sound Cloud here.

T is for Tori: Tori is my actual legal name, not Victoria. My name has been quite the subject or curiosity over the years, people insist its not my real name and they also insist that I spell my name wrong. Silly people. I was named after a Soap Opera character… which is so funny because Kayla, the lovely lady who tagged me was ALSO named after a Soap Opera character. Love it!

U is for Understanding: Whenever there is a conflict or something of the sort I tend to try and understand where every person is coming from. It makes it easier to make rational choices and move forward. But sometimes its not that easy haha.

V is for Vasanti: Vasanti is a Canadian cosmetic brand that I am really liking so far! I have a cream blush by them that I love, an eyeshadow duo that is to die for and a coloured balm that makes my lips so oh so kissable. Check them out if you’re ever visiting Canada!

PicMonkey Collagevasanti

W is for Wine: I love me some red wine. Sometimes you just can’t beat coming home from a long day of working to pour yourself a glass and make dinner and relax. That or red wine with a bath, love it!

X is for Xavier: Yes I mean Dr. Xavier from X-Men. He is a super cool and inspiring character that encourages people to experience who they are and use it to their strengths, the dude puts out a good message!

Y is for YSL: I am currently in love with the YSL Glossy Stains, they are brilliant and make your lips look absolutely freaking amazing! If you don’t own one yet and you are a lip gloss fanatic, I recommend, but save up and make sure you look into a shade you’ll love!

Z is for Zero: Did you ever see the whole One Tree Hill/ Sophia Bush Zero is not a size thing? As wonderful and inspiring as this is I need to say something — and that is that zero is most certainly a size, just as four is and eight is and ten is and fourteen is. We all have different sizes and instead of saying “big is beautiful — zero isn’t a size” or “Only dogs date bones aka skinny girls” or “Look how fat she is” Why don’t we all take a second to realize no matter our size we all need support to feel at our most beautiful. So encourage being healthy and having a healthy level of self-esteem, no matter your size. Every single person has insecurities, lets try and change that!

Hey everyone,

We are so very lucky! The lovely Charlotte of A Little Touch of Charlotte has nominated us for our second Liebster award. See our first post here if you’d like to see the questions and answers from Aurélie Blondin‘s nomination and learn about the Liebster award.

liebster_award_badges

1. Which beauty or make up brand would you really love to try?
T: Soap and Glory, V raves about it. Can’t believe I haven’t tried it yet!
V: I really want to try Inglot – everytime I see peoples palettes in their videos my heart gets heavy!
2. What is  your all time favourite beauty product?
T: Oh my… can I say my Real Technique brushes? Those or my Marcelle Cream Blush in Coral (Comes up a lot for me doesn’t it?)
V: RT Brushes, for the win. Changed the way I was able to apply my makeup (and my wallet liked it as well)
3. What do you think the best thing about blogging is?
T: Everything! I just love it, taking photos, writing, putting it all together, getting feedback, connecting with others. Love it all.
V: Getting to add my opinions into the melting pot of the beauty community.
4. Do you have a favourite place? If so where is it?
T: Oh, hard question! My imagination… 🙂
V: So far…it has to be the Lampang Elephant Conservation Centre in Lampang, Thailand. Spent Christmas day there last year, and it was the most magical place.
5. Who do you admire?
T: My brother. I’ve watched him take quite the journey of self discovery. He seriously inspires me.
V: My sister. Her strength, ability to get what she wants. Always knows what to say when needed.
6. If you could give one piece of advice to your 5-years-ago self what would it be?
T: Be persistent with the things you love and tell mom and dad they HAVE to push you to pursue your dreams.
V: Don’t stop doing what you love. Tell the ones you love more often how much you do.
7. Do you prefer a dramatic lip or a dramatic eye?
T: Right now definitely a dramatic lip. I feel like my eyes are a weird shape and I’m still trying to master them.
V: Eyes, for sure.
8. How do you treat yourself after a long day?
T: A snuggle with my cat, a hot bath and a cup of tea or a glass of red wine.
V: Red Wine, bubble bath, listening to the record of choice for the evening (I’m about to do such right now!)9. What is your favourite thing about yourself?
V: My inability to ever be satisfied, to ever settle.
T: My ability to still be a child while being a grown woman.

V: Standing up for what I think is right, for what I believe in. It has taken me a long time to build such confidence, but it has been life changing.
T: My ability to choose to fight. I’ve learned I can be very courageous in the face of adversity… but it didn’t start out that way.
11. What is your favourite make-up brand that isn’t quite as well known?
T: I’ve really been enjoying the Canadian brand Vasanti! (They could totally be well known, but I just found out about them!)

The Pretty Lovely LIEBSTER Award

Firstly. Wow.

I’ve been seeing the Liebster award running around the beauty blogger world since we started a few short weeks ago and now the lovely, Aurélie Blondin has nominated us! We feel lovely! Basically it is all about nominating fellow bloggers who are under 200 followers, to help them get the word out about their totally rad blog. Once you get nominated, you answer some questions, then nominate 11 more bloggers and give them questions to answer. Pretty simple, pretty awesome!

Liebster-Award

The questions we got are as follows:

1. If all your makeup was taken away but you could keep 3 things, what would they be?

V: Would have to be…My Illamasqua Skin Base foundation, MAC Girl About Town Lippy & Clinique High Impact Mascara in Black/Brown

IMG_1747

T: Probably my Benefit They’re Real Mascara, my Bourjois Healthy Serum Foundation in Vanilla and my Marcelle Cream blush in Coral.

IMG_8909

2. What is your favorite fashion item?

T: My big huge scarf from H&M.

IMG_8910

V: My handmade cotton scarf I got in Istanbul last year, bought it from the lady who actually made it. One of my favourite pieces from my travels. (Not able to get a photo – it is back at my parents house from Christmas!)

3. What is your favourite blush?

T: Mentioned above my Marcelle Cream Blush in Coral, I’ve fallen in love.

V: Right now, it probably has to be MAC’s Creamblend Blush in Ladyblush

4. What is your favourite movie?

T: Detention by Joseph Kahn starring Josh Hutcherson. I may look like just another teen movie, but it is seriously brilliant and reflects pop culture intensely. Watch the trailer here.

V: This is something that changes so often for me – but the most recent movie that I loved watching was Annie Hall from 1977. Definitely on a classic movie kick as of late.

5. What/who inspired inspired you to blog?

T: I’ve always enjoyed it, I can remember that far back. But for Pretty Lovely Girls, sharing my passion for make-up with V totally inspired starting this.

V: I think I’ve always felt like I would be really into this sort of thing, but it wasn’t until discussing it for real with T that made it seem more possible. She definitely helped build up my courage to do this. (And she’ll have to do it again when we decide to tackle YouTube, lol.)

6. Leather or fur?

T: Leather. Although I don’t actually have any so…

V: I feel like I should technically say neither, but Leather for this instance.

7. Tell us one makeup tip that changed your life.

T: Oh jeez… Practice? Haha

V: Practice like crazy. And watching youtubers like Pixiwoo, etc. – It helped me a lot seeing other people apply it on themselves. Small things like to look down when applying liquid liner, etc.!

8. What is the best advice you ever received from someone? (Does not have to be beauty related!)

T: This quote (I guess its not a someone, whoops)

Screen Shot 2014-01-26 at 1.01.35 PM

V: Whenever I’m feeling stressed out, sad, frustrated, anxious….”Just take a nap”

9.What is your favourite era in terms of beauty or fashion? (Your know like 50’s, 60’s, etc.)

T: I feel I seriously missed out on the 60’s and 70’s… and the 50’s for that matter.

V: I consider myself to be a mix between the 50s & 70s. Classic most of the time, yet thrown in wide leg trousers or some awesome bohemian prints into the mix and I’m set.

10. What is your staple party look – from beauty to fashion?

V: Similar to Tori…Toooo similar……….But a bit more into a heavier eye versus bold lip.

T: Oh, it always changes! But right now perhaps a simple eye/face and a bold lip. Clothes… I’m always tempted to wear jeans and a cool stylish hoodie or T-shirt. Or cool tights with a nice sweater.

11. If there was one thing you could buy (money being no object) what would it be?

V: A beautiful apartment along the Champs Elysee in Paris.

T: An entire Anthropology store or a house on High Park Boulevard in Toronto.
