Spread The Laughter

Hey Pretty Lovelies!

First off I am sincerely sorry for being MIA. Unfortunately I have some sad news to share. My mom has passed away. She was the most special person in the world to me, my best friend.

10639602_10202802426255594_2705222384825039966_n
She taught me so much about what it meant to be a strong woman and a strong person and how sharing love can be the best feeling in the world. I don’t feel prepared to write a whole post about this part of my life just yet, though I will in the future – to help others who are also going through loss and to educate people on why you shouldn’t be scared of grieving or having a grieving person in your life.

But before that post happens, I wanted to spread some LOVE AND LAUGHTER!

While I was home my best friend Ally came to be with me, she is my sister and my mom was like her second mom. A couple years ago Ally and I started a YouTube Channel called The Bright n Shiny Show. Its main purpose is to make people smile and laugh, with a few life lessons and other random stuff we want to document and share. We currently live across the country from one another but while she was home we did THE WHISPER CHALLENGE!

So here it is, ready for your viewing pleasure! It was just the pick me up I needed. SPREAD THE LAUGHTER!

Hey Pretty Lovelies!

The weather in Toronto is slowly and yet all too suddenly becoming colder and colder. This generally means we’re starting to face new obstacles when it comes to our skin – like dry patches, scaly legs, looking dull, etc.¬†One of my self-love practices is taking care of my body. That is why I have these cold winter essentials to ensure I don’t experiences these cold weather misfortunes. As there are a few, here is my Part I where I focus on body care products. (and more)
[Check out a post on Pretty Bad Ingredients]

scrub

Awaken Sea Salt Scrub from Arbonne’s Aromassentials – $36¬†

Talk about my HOLY GRAIL scrub – I reviewed it a while back.¬†Here¬†it is if you’re interested. This sea salt scrub is full of beautiful smelling essential oils that hydrate your skin instantly ensuring that it is left looking supple, luminescent¬†and beautiful. The sea salt works to scrub away all the dry patches and heals and repairs at the same time, revealing brighter healthier looking skin!

Before I found this scrub my legs were always so painfully dry and scaly – now I don’t have that problem. That is why this beautiful scrub has made it onto my cold weather essentials. I use it 3-4 times a week depending on how often I want to pamper myself.

seasource

Re-Mineralizing Body Lotion 24H from Arbonne’s SeaSource Detox Spa – $61

Finding a moisturizer that I love has always been a hard task for me. Either it doesn’t actually hydrate and it just masks the problem or it is too oily and greasy. When I first tried this moisturizer I was BLOWN AWAY! I love it. It has a hydro-trap technology that helps to hydrate and hold its moisture so you’re not losing it throughout the day. It also helps to give your skin a firmer appearance and it soften your skin. Also because its sea salt based it repairs and heals! I happily use it everyday!

handsandfeet

Pampermint Hand and Foot Care Set from Arbonne’s Holiday line – $46

The smell is INSANELY YUMMY. When I put it on to pamper my hands or feet I can’t help but breath in that authentic candy-cane smell. I just want to eat my hands! And the best part in it is not artificial fragrance that has tons of chemicals, it is all safe smells that come from real ingredients! Everyone asks what it is every time I wear it – it is the perfect smell to get into the holiday spirit.

So there are three of my ALL TIME FAVOURITE cold weather essentials for the body, keep your eyes open for the next one which will be face related! Also one of these goodies could be in a giveaway I’m planning to do soon – so eyes open for that as well!

What are some of your favourite cold weather essentials? Have you tried any of these must haves?

Pretty Great “Ingredients” Series

pretty great ingredients

Hey Pretty Lovelies!

You may have seen the Pretty Bad Ingredients post which focused on educating our readers on how important reading your labels is! Now on the flip side I’m giving you some ingredients, etc that are good for you! So here are a few things you want to look for when shopping for both skincare and beauty!

1. pH Correct
Did you know that our skin is actually slightly acidic? It sits at a 5.5 on the pH scale. And the reason its slightly acidic is to ward off pollutants, free radicles, environment, etc. So its seriously important to be using a product that is pH correct. When you use a product that isn’t pH correct it strips your acid mantle and can cause problem skin like dry skin, oily skin, acne, break-outs, etc. We aren’t suppose to have problem skin! When I switched to a pH correct product my skin totally changed, I no longer have dry skin, and my skin has a new glow. I only get break-outs when I eat unhealthy or sometimes when its that time of the month.

2. Vegan
I’m pretty sure all of us here LOVE animals, and if you don’t — shame on you! They’re adorable and fluffy and the best. It is so easy for us to turn a blind eye to skincare and cosmetics companies that test on animals. But for me once I found all vegan skincare and cosmetics it was a no brainer, why would I support companies that have shitty morals? Yes I write for a beauty blog and yes I will review and talk about products from companies that do test on animals and that do have animal by-products but on a day to day basis I’m all about vegan. I think from now on I’ll make a note on each post about whether a product is cruelty-free or not.

3. Dermatologist TESTED
Often we’ll see dermatologist recommended on a product. This means that the dermatologist was paid for by the company to recommend it, regardless of whether they believe in or like the product or not. But when you see dermatologist tested you know its a product that has been responsibly tested for you. Tested usually means that whatever the product says it does, it actually does!

Feel free to ask any questions if you have any! Do you have any ingredients, etc that you look for in your products?

Stay lovely,

Pretty Bad Ingredients Series

Pretty Bad Ingredients

Hey Pretty Lovelies!

As some of you may know within the last few months I started working with a vegan health and wellness company called Arbonne as a consultant. I’ve always been fascinated by how skincare and beauty products impact our health so I love that my job is about educating people. I thought it would be a fun idea to do a series of posts that focus on that! Look out for Pretty Great Ingredients where I’ll talk about things you want from your skincare and cosmetics!

1. Mineral Oil
Skincare and beauty companies are so sneaky because when I first saw the word mineral oil I thought it was a good thing, like mineral water, etc. But it turns out its actually a by-product of the crude oil industry – read Benzene Gasoline! It costs the gas companies a lot of money to dispose of it properly so instead they sell it off to skincare and beauty companies (especially in North America) so they can use it as cheap filler. And if thats not bad enough its linked to cancer, its the 2nd reason for aging after the sun AND it sits on your skin like plastic¬†wrap so your biggest detoxifying organ aka your skin can’t detox and IF there is anything good in the product its not going in to benefit you.

2. Glycerin
Aka Animal by-product. This is definitely the one that upsets me the most and why I strive to use all Vegan skincare and beauty products for my day to day routine. Have you ever heard of Animal Rendering? Its the recycling process by which Animal by-products get into skincare and beauty (this is a HUGE Industry in North America). They take all meat deemed inedible for us like roadkill, euthanized pets, dead zoo animals, rotten meat, etc and they boil it all together and whatever rises to the top — you guessed it, gets sold to cosmetic companies for filler. Also natural and organic products can still have animal by-products so looking for the word Vegan is key.¬†Note: Glycerin (plant) is in the safe zone!

3. Parfum (Fragrance)
This is an umbrella term for a variety of cocktail chemicals, meaning these companies don’t actually have to tell you what they’ve put in the product! That seriously scares me because there are about 3,000 chemicals they can use and leave nameless without even testing to see if they are TOXIC! And if a product says fragrance free or unscented it can still have chemicals to mask smells of the other chemicals in the products.

Now I’m not going to throw any companies under the bus just yet but I strongly encourage you to READ YOUR LABELS! Even if these products aren’t doing damage to your health now, over time they definitely will. So I suggest starting to introduce safer, healthier products into your day to day routine.

If you are curious to know more let me know as I love educating and spreading the word! Do YOU have any ingredients you like to avoid?

V: The Self Love Tag

The selflovetag
Hey Pretty Lovelies!

I figured I would carry forwards T’s great Self Love Tag post from Sunday and do it myself!

Here are the rules:
Answer all of the below questions in a blog post.
Then nominate at least 5 other bloggers.

1. What does Self-love mean to you?
Self love to me means putting yourself before anyone else. It means being able to step back when needed and to do what you need and is best for yourself. It is something that I work on every day, and still have ways to go.

2. What is your favourite way to pamper yourself?
My favourite evenings at home are when I’m listening to my favourite tunes du jour, having some much needed wine and getting into a good book.

3. What are your three favourite hobbies/ pass times that make your soul feel on fire?
Reading, drinking coffee/wine, having great conversations with the ones I love.

coffee-tells-wine

4. What movie always puts you in a good mood when you’re not in the greatest mood?
Tori and I are too similar…I’m going to just leave her answer here!!!! Probably The Wedding Date, I’m a sucker for Romantic Comedies.
PicMonkey Collagewd

5. Who do you trust SO MUCH that you would easily believe in anything and everything they said?
My sister. I grew up believing all of the silly things she used to say…and still do! And the legitimate ones too.

6. What quote totally motivates you?
To be honest I don’t really have a favourite quote…but given stress in my life recently, ‘one day at a time’ seems relevant.

images

7. When was the last time you took yourself on a date? What did you do?
I have a date with myself every Friday night :).

8. What make-up or beauty product makes you feel like a million bucks?
All of my skincare products. Taking care of my skin every morning and night is the best thing that I do for myself and absolutely love it.

9. What is the last thing you did for someone else that made you feel amazing?
I can’t say I remember the last thing exactly that I did for someone else, but I know that just as my friends are there for me on a daily basis, I am there for them. But I absolutely need to be more self aware of these things.

10. Do you feel comfortable with and without make-up on? Why?
Yes. I don’t wear makeup probably 3 days a week. I guess one thing that I was given a break is with my skin. I don’t have perfect skin – but good enough that I don’t mind not wearing make up. I love letting my skin breathe, but don’t take it the wrong way! Make up is one of my biggest loves!

11. What piece of advice would you give a child about to grow up with the pressures of today’s media and its crushing expectations?
Take pride in who you are and what you really want to do with your life, and do all that is possible to get there – because one day all of those people who ever made you second guess anything will be a distant memory and you will be surrounding by like minded, respectful and wonderful individuals.

12. What song puts you in a good mood every time?
I don’t think I could narrow this down to one song – but maybe one day I’ll post my current favourite playlist ūüôā

13. What is the best advice someone gave you or you realized about life?
Just breathe.

14. Who makes you giggle like a giggle monster?
Again – I think all of my friends. We all have our different abilities to make eachother laugh for different reasons, and it’s wonderful.

15. What is something about society that bugs you that you wish didn’t?
Ignorance of our generation. I get very bothered and upset when I hear that friends or peers of mine couldn’t care less to be aware of what is going on in the world. I disgusts me that we who are so.damn.fortunate are more than happy to live in a ladeeda world and turn a blind eye. Great things, great change doesn’t happen that way. Loving ourselves is important, but it won’t help to change the worlds problems. I want to make a difference with my life, and I think it’s an absolute tragedy that all most young people (especially females) care about is how many calories they burned at the gym today. Open your eyes, be aware of the world – and truly humble yourself in the process.

16. What is one of your favourite things to do on the weekends?
Sleep. Legitimately my favourite thing about the weekends. I don’t have to think about stress from work, nonsense from anything else. I like to sleep in until my body decides to wake up (within reason) and catch up on news, reading…whatever I truly feel like doing that day. Sleep is one of the best things possible, and I attribute my overall attitude, happiness, ability to deal with stress, and even my skin to my sleep. Yep.

homer-sleep1

17. What is something you’re really proud of that you’ve done?
When I stopped listening to everyone else, and when I stopped bothering reading Perez or other gossip sites. Stopped buying magazines and going on insane Facebook creeps on people who I was ‘jealous’ of. I stopped all of that self-destructive behaviour and I came out on top.¬†

18. What is one of your favourite memories with one of your friends?
All of them.

19. What advice would you give someone who needs a boost in confidence?
Unplug from the world. Start for a little while, turn your cell phone on silent (other than important calls) when you come home from work or school. Don’t log into Facebook for an entire evening. Start small. There are now weeks that I will go without logging in or reading up on gossip. These are the things that will destroy your self confidence bit by bit. Learn to love yourself and love to be alone. I¬†love spending time alone. I love those days or weekends where I won’t even open my laptop, or look at my phone for an entire day. Start trying to be comfortable spending time with yourself, I promise you that the confidence will come quickly.

20. Lastly, how do you plan on investing in self-love?
Putting my goals and aspirations before anyone else. Do they wanna go out to eat at an expensive restaurant? Maybe it isn’t in my budget, so I will allow myself to say no.¬†If I really feel like drinking on a Saturday night because I really, really wanted to be productive and have a great Sunday, then¬†I will allow myself to say no.

I tag YOU, the reader to go and do your version of this tag. Even if you don’t have a blog, answer the questions to yourself or your friends.

Thanks again to my best blogger queen in crime T for writing this amazing post and for letting me be a part of this entire experience with her.

Self-Love Sunday: The Self-Love Tag

The selflovetag
Hey Pretty Lovelies!

I noticed a few posts back when I did The Life in Letters Tag people responded pretty well. So I figured if people like tags, and I like self-love, why not create a self-love tag!

Here are the rules:
Answer all of the below questions in a blog post.
Then nominate at least 5 other bloggers. (Feel free to do more, promoting self-love is awesome, I just didn’t want to create a huge daunting number)
Contact those bloggers and you are good to go!

1. What does Self-love mean to you?
For me it means investing in a relationship with yourself. Treating yourself like you would treat the love of your life, because in my opinion, YOU should be the love of your life.

2. What is your favourite way to pamper yourself?
I like lighting yummy smelling candles and soaking in the bath! That or getting my nails done ALWAYS feels great… there is just something about that classic cliche.
PicMonkey Collagenails

3. What are your three favourite hobbies/ pass times that make your soul feel on fire?
Having something I call ¬†Deep and Meaningful conversations. I LOVE having those talks that just make me feel like my soul is swelling up!¬†Acting, I’ve always loved it and always will… must have come from my massive imaginations as a child and always wanting to play pretend.¬†Writing totally feeds me soul, whether I’m writing here on Pretty Lovely Girls or writing a fictional story, I love it.

4. What movie always puts you in a good mood when you’re not in the greatest mood?
Probably The Wedding Date, I’m a sucker for Romantic Comedies.
PicMonkey Collagewd

5. Who do you trust SO MUCH that you would easily believe in anything and everything they said?
Hands down my brother Dax. He is seriously a huge part of who I am today because he taught me to be open minded and kind and to explore my inner workings.

6. What quote totally motivates you?
This John Lennon quote, for sure! It made me realize that sometimes other people wont understand your desire to just be happy and kind. And that is ok, it doesn’t mean you have to stop wanting to be happy and kind — especially to yourself.
johnlennon

7. When was the last time you took yourself on a date? What did you do?
I’ll say shopping… just me, the mall and my Starbucks Vanilla Chai Latte. Yes please! That was maybe two weeks ago.

8. What make-up or beauty product makes you feel like a million bucks?
My nighttime skincare routine ALWAYS makes me feel so lovely in the evening. I actually look forward to it all day. I am SUPER excited to do a post on it.
night routine

9. What is the last thing you did for someone else that made you feel amazing?
Probably getting all of Josh’s (my boyfriend) birthday gifts and showering him with multiple presents haha. But the best one was getting one of the only photos he has of him, his mom and his dad enlarged and framed.

10. Do you feel comfortable with and without make-up on? Why?
Honestly, it depends on the day. Sometimes I feel so flawless without make-up and other days I’m like… yikes, cover THAT up. I’d say I mostly wear make-up because its fun but there are totally days when I’m worried about what other think of how I look, which is definitely something I’m working on. I think I actually feel like I look the best at the end of the day after my night time skincare routine!

11. What piece of advice would you give a child about to grow up with the pressures of today’s media and its crushing expectations?
Its so hard to pick one thing. I think teaching kids to be confident in who they are no matter how they look, etc is so important. And I think it starts with US feeling confident and showing them that.

12. What song puts you in a good mood every time?
Love is On The Radio by McFly FOR SURE. It’s just so feel good.
PicMonkey Collagemcfly

13. What is the best advice someone gave you or you realized about life?
At the end of the day, no matter what happens, you are NEVER alone. You ALWAYS have yourself. Seriously the one person you will always have is you, so why not invest in yourself so your life partner (again YOU) feels happy and fulfilled?

14. Who makes you giggle like a giggle monster?
Without a doubt one of my best friends Ally. She can literally say ONE WORD and I’m on the ground laughing my butt off. We have this weird affect on each other. Sometimes we don’t even say a word and suddenly we are both stuck in a fit of giggles. Man, its the best feeling in the world.
PicMonkey Collageat

15. What is something about society that bugs you that you wish didn’t?
For me, I think gender roles and stereotypes. Miss Representation, the documentary really gets my blood boiling because it hurts me to see how much woman suffer in todays society. But also how boys and men suffer. I can’t wait to see The Mask You Live In. Gender roles and stereotypes seriously have to be changed, it has to be opened up and expanded and redefined for sure. So that girls can feel comfortable being leaders and dressing how they like and so boys can feel comfortable being emotional the expressive.

PicMonkey Collagegender

16. What is one of your favourite things to do on the weekends?
Definitely waking up to a fresh cup of tea and sitting at my lap top catching up on Beauty Blogger stuff and relaxing.

PicMonkey Collagetea

17. What is something you’re really proud of that you’ve done?
Probably putting my foot down and saying, its my life, I’ll do what I want, even if that means people will grill me for leaving school without graduating. If I know it wont fulfill me, I’ll change it. I’m proud of the courage I have to change things.¬†

18. What is one of your favourite memories with one of your friends?
With Ally, dancing like an idiot around my room around this time last year with a feather boa to Carly Rae Jepsen, up that happened.

19. What advice would you give someone who needs a boost in confidence?
Don’t try to gain confidence for others, gain it for yourself. Basically work on you, what makes you happy? What makes you feel alive and proud? The more you invest in that, the more happy you feel, the more that will shine out and to me thats confidence.¬†

20. Lastly, how do you plan on investing in self-love?
I want to really listen to myself and be aware of my needs and spend my time doing things that make me genuinely happy and surround myself with people who are happy and supportive.

And there it is — The Self-Love Tag! I hope you enjoyed it!

I tag ANYONE and EVERYONE that wants to take part, comment with a link to your post.

I also tag the following wonderful blogs!
